O oryx-eyed one, turn your arrows away from my throat;
O eyes of the oryx, draw your arrows back from my throat.
I have no patience against the volleys of glances.
For I have no endurance against the volley of glances.

Spare the heart of the love-besotted lover,
And spare the heart of the lovesick, enthralled lover,
for the magic within those eyelids has terrified it.
For the magic in those eyelids has frightened him.

And I had taken no precautions against her glances.

أتى المرء بالنقصان من حيث لا يدرى
No caution avails against fate once its decree runs on;
Nor can caution avail against fate when it runs its course:
loss comes to a man from where he does not know.
It brings a person loss from an unsuspected quarter.

My life for her whom, fearing slanderers, I compel
by lowering an eyelid and casting a sidelong glance.
To lower her eyelid and cast sidelong glances;

She dealt truly with me in love, as I with her,
And for her who was true to me in love, as I was to her,
and we trafficked neither in delusion nor betrayal.
For we never dealt with one another in deception or betrayal.

For one like her, even the sober-minded yearns passionately,
Even the prudent man yearns for one like her with ardent love,
and every rugged ascent grows easy for the rider.
And the ascent grows easy for all whose riding-course is rugged.

we have been burdened with more estrangement than we can bear.
She was burdened with an estrangement we cannot endure.

To God I complain: within the heart is burning anguish
that turns the lover's innards upon the coals,
That turns the lover's entrails upon glowing coals.

Spend the night with the star for company until dawn.

I keep my eyes ever estranged from sleep,
My eye refuses anything but avoiding slumber;
and wonder whether any way remains to the dream-phantom.
Oh, my shame! Have I any excuse to offer the dream-phantom?

I drank love until I was drunk, and was made drunker still
the distance of the one I love added drunkenness to drunkenness.
By my beloved's distance—drunkenness upon drunkenness.

Passion wore me thin, and parting uprooted my eyes,
Love wasted me away, and separation tore out my eye;
until I lay cast down, with neither course nor command.
So I lay cast aside, unable to run or be of use.

How strange that separation should pursue my lifeblood
like a vindictive foe who sleeps with no blood-debt unavenged.
With a vindictive man's pursuit, sleepless over an unavenged wrong.

whose very memory the slayer of oppression and brooding care erased:
Whose memory and very thought the slayer of injustice erased:

And in his hand lie whatever benefit and harm he wills.

So fear the torrent of his hand's bounty, for it engulfs:

The firmly rooted mountains keep swimming in its sea.

Yet we do not fulfill the duty of praise and gratitude.
