If the lovesick lover cannot escape your abandonment,

And even if it does not match his suffering, rejection cuts him down,

Do not forsake him as one who does not love you,

Nor as one whom distance makes forget his love for you,

Nor as one whose love for you is like his love for others.

He goes at evening and at dawn, steadfast in heart.

Ask the night: it will tell you, and it speaks the truth,

And swear that I have no acquaintance with sleep,

And that my eyelids have not met since you left,

Nor closed except upon a welling tear.

And that my eyelids have not met since you left,

And closed only upon a welling tear.

Blessed is whoever fills his eyelids with slumber,

While my eyelid alone is filled with tears and sleeplessness.

When this night falls, my own Judgment Day rises,

And foe rises to aid foe in the war against me.

    The water of my tears kindles the fire of my anguish;

When I try to quench it with that water, the blaze flares up.

Had they seen my night and how long it stretches,

People would not have said, 'Everything has a limit.'

I have sighs whenever talk of you arises,

Singly and in pairs—thunder falls short of the smallest.

    By my life, you have cast me into love's snares;

My escape from them, should I seek it, lies far off.

You softened toward me with affection and favor,

So bone, flesh, and skin softened toward you.

You drew me near until, once you possessed me,

And no power remained to me to loose or bind myself,

You turned away from me when I had strength

To brace my love-stricken heart and make it firm.

So may God not hold the beloved to account, for they

Think little of what longing does to us.

Our beloved, will you not soften your hearts?

For even flinty stone has softened for me at my suffering.

By God, I have committed no sin against you

That could furnish an excuse when the promise is broken.

    I remain in the love you have known from me;

And who will ensure the pledge is kept as I keep it?

My love is still my love, and my passion the same passion

Within me; my affection for you is still that same affection.

    فما ليَ فيها صدورٌ ولا وردُ

    Farewell to pleasures and companionship after you;

For I neither depart from their waters nor come to drink.

I do nothing but wail, as though I were

An adversary of Yahya whose people the troops have uprooted.

King of all creatures, pure in kingship—the one

At whose charge the lofty mountains nearly crumble.

    A lion—[unclear epithet]—one who struts in a thicket,

When we utter his name—the tawny lion.

    I would ransom him with my life, after his enemy;

Once they ransom him, I would afterward be his ransom.

You see every king seeking good fortune with all his might,

While Yahya is a man whom good fortune seeks in kingship.

Were he to march without the army in pursuit of glory,

Death and rout, through his good fortune, would undo them.

They said, 'The foes have risen to sow corruption.'

Yet has a slaughtered creature any strength in its movements?

    He resolved that it be left empty, like the emptying of Juhayna;

Everyone who hears it says, 'That is resolve and earnestness.'

My God, sustain his protection with aid and a watchful eye,

And say, my God, 'There is no alternative to aiding him.'

For You know what lies hidden

For us within him; have mercy on us, for Your mercy is our aim.

He is nothing but a father to his servants,

And we, his servants, are children under his loving care.

O king of the world, and best of its kings,

Choose virtues whose number cannot be counted,

And you who are a marvel of kindness and generosity,

On which even habitual deniers are unanimous.

You gave, gave lavishly, and singled me out

With what neither praise nor gratitude can repay.

Until Zayd thought that my payment order,

Being so large, was an oversight on your part, not deliberate.

And became certain, from what he had imagined, that you

Would revoke it when scrutiny brought it to light.

So he withheld it from me, thinking its accumulation

Would find favor in Yahya's eyes when it appeared.

He sent my messenger back empty-handed and brought it

To you—a deed whose like deserves no praise.

It is others, not you, whose eyes wealth fills,

And whose judgment leaves them when they see gold.

So do not accept it from him; let him learn that

The palms of generosity do not bend back once outstretched,

And be ashamed of those suspicions and mend his ways.

For Yahya is an ocean whose nature is to swell.

My God, grant him more love every day,

For through him our bounty has increased each day.
