O you, by whose bounty my flesh and blood have grown,

By God, I am not suspect in my counsel.

And I, for sincerity toward you in my deeds

and love, am more renowned than a fire on a mountain.

So I befriend only those who befriend him,

nor associate with any but those sincere in service.

Nor have I ventured upon anything you hate,

only to gnash my teeth, bewildered with regret.

Nor have I ever deliberately done what you do not approve,

nor have my thoughts or ambitions run in that direction.

Nor have I intended it or favored anyone accused—

no, by Him who taught humankind with the pen.

    I ask God's forgiveness; yet I am a man

who cannot give due thanks for the blessings you bestow.

Nor am I one who can repay even the least favor.

What value do my thanks, my counsel, and my services have?

All the bounty is God's and the sultan's,

bestowed upon me; faults and failings are among my traits.

Who could make me need you no longer, that I should prefer him

to hope in you, O my pillar and my refuge?

No creature is more deserving of humankind's pity

than the innocent man when beset by accusations,

and passing the night cast aside, though obedient and upright,

counted among those undone by a slip of the foot.

When I see my humiliation after the honor shown me,

and all the servants have barred me from standing in attendance,

I nearly kill myself, but then I am held back

by knowing that you are the most faithful of humankind to your pledges.

And your excellent judgments discern the difference

when fat and swelling resemble each other.

And what eases matters is that no seeing eye

fails to distinguish between light and darkness.

I do not fear excessive estrangement from a king

whose rulings are all founded on wisdom.

For a day of your estrangement is like a year to a young man

who goes blind if a day passes without his aiding you.

O peerless king, in whom are gathered

the excellences of Arab and non-Arab kingship,

al-Nasir the King, son of al-Ashraf the King,

son of al-Afdal, son of Ali, ruler of nations,

the keen, cleaving sword, son of the keen, cleaving sword,

son of the keen, cleaving sword, son of the keen, cleaving sword:

    أمست تقلبه الاهوى على الضرم

    Have mercy on a lover's heart, in which you dwell;

passions now turn it over upon the blazing fire.

It complains to you—you who have been merciful to it—

of sickness; and you are the one who heals sickness.

I never thought that time would bereave me

with separation and distance before burial beneath piled stones.

Yet I am certain that there will reach me

from you a hand that begins with bounty and generosity.
