أحاجيك في شيء إذا ما سرقته
فيat نصابthe legal threshold ليسnot يلزمنيis imposed on me القطعamputation
في نصاب ليس يلزمني القطع
I pose you a riddle about a thing: if I steal it
I ask you about something, if I were to steal it
In an amount reaching the legal threshold, I am not liable to amputation,
In an amount that does not oblige me to have my hand cut off
علىdespite أنthe fact that فيهin it القطعcutting والحدand the prescribed penalty ثابتestablished
على أن فيه القطع والحد ثابت
ولاand no حدprescribed penalty فيهin it هكذاthus حكمthe ruling of الشرعreligious law
ولا حد فيه هكذا حكم الشرع
Though cutting is in it and the prescribed penalty is established,
Yet in it is established the penalty of cutting off the hand
Yet no prescribed penalty applies to it—such is the ruling of religious law.
And no such penalty in it, thus has the Law decreed
