أاتى الإسلام من حيث أمن

واشتكى القطر من السقف المكن

Has Islam been assailed from where it felt secure,

and has the land complained of the firm roof?

ما عهدنا من علي مثلها

في شباب لا ولا وهو مسن

We have never known anything like this from Ali,

not in his youth, nor when he is old.

زلة جاءت ولكن من فتى

قلبه بالحب للدين عجن

A lapse has occurred, but from a young man

whose heart was kneaded with love for the faith.

فأعن في الله تحمد وتصب

وعلى الله تعالى لا تعن

So lend aid for God's sake; you will be praised and do right.

And do not lend aid against God Most High.

صحبة الزنديق فيها ريبة

من دنا من موضع الطعن طعن

Companionship with the heretic holds grounds for suspicion;

whoever nears the place of attack is attacked.

ما يقول الناس فيمن قد رضى

صحبة المفتون إلا قد فتن

What do people say of one who has accepted

the company of one led astray, except that he too has been led astray?

ان خير الرسل خير لكم

من مشى في طرقه البيض أمن

Indeed, the best of messengers is best for you.

Whoever walks his white paths is safe.

فاتبعوه واقتفوا آثاره

لا تطيعوا كل ذي رأي أفن

So follow him and follow his footsteps.

Do not obey anyone of feeble judgment,

يجعل الأصنام ربا ويرى

ربه من شآء من إنس وجن

who makes idols a lord and regards

whomever he wishes, among humans and jinn, as his lord.

إن رب العرض قد بغضهم

نحو عبد الله بغضا لم يهن

Indeed, the Lord of honor has made them hateful

to Abd Allah, with a hatred that has not weakened.

بغضه والحمد لله لهم

يوصل اللعن إلى من قد لعن

His hatred for them—praise be to God—

carries the curse to those already cursed.
