For her, I am bound neither to sleep nor to forget,
I must not sleep or rest
And neither reproach nor rebuke can avail with me.
And reproach and blame will not avail

Would that my eyelids were sewn shut in slumber,
If I were to sew my eyelids to wakefulness
Perhaps I could be alone with her there, even for an hour.
Perhaps I’d find with her some time alone

Today I wished for a visit from her in sleep,
Today I wished to see her in a dream
And one denied the whole may well wish for a part.
While others wish for what is past and gone

By God I’d not before been satisfied
With what one accepts of closeness from a beloved who has a beloved.
With what would satisfy one whose love lives on

وللدهر حكم في زمان نعيبه

نسميه جورا وهو في غيره عدل
And Time has a decree we fault in one season,
Fate judges in a time we find unjust
We call it injustice, though in another it is justice.
Calling it tyranny, though elsewhere justice

And for a lover who exceeded all bounds
So neither letters nor messengers reach me.
No letters now reach me, no envoys call

For one like Layla, a man kills himself,
For one like Layla a man may take his life
And being slain is no great price for loving her.
Though many with lesser love refrain from death

How soon companionship was torn apart!

My friend, I remember days we swore
She departed with praise; no deed of hers was blamed.
Thanks to her virtue, none reproached her deeds

وفي اليد حبل منه فانقطع الحبل
A beloved among beloveds, carried far away by separation,
A darling of all, torn by fate from me
And in my hand was a cord from him—then the cord snapped.
The rope slipped through my hands and broke in two

How strange is separation—may its milk never flow!
How wondrous is our separation! Was there
Had it no other business in this world besides us?
No other in the world whose time it took?

Friends, how lonesome the earth since you left!
To us! The paths have narrowed for their masters.
The roads grew narrow for want of travelers

You went far away, making my once-cheap fortitude dear,
You went away, and made cheap my endurance,
And my patience; you cheapened tears that once were dear.
My patience, my tears too costly to shed

To God I complain, if He willed we'd be together
We would return to the bond that we had before.
As we were before in those days long ago

I went far from home to forget my love for you through others,
I traveled to forget your love with strangers
Yet to a thirsty mouth, nothing but water tastes sweet.
But other lips, not yours, can only bitter water bestow

After him, where can I find heart's ease?

سيوف مليك لم يصب عندها دخل
It is lost, as was the blood spilled by
As blood shed in vain by a heedless king
A king's swords, in which no flaw was found.
Who afterward felt no regret, no pity
