Our limbs envied our eyes because of you,
Our eyes were envious of you
when they beheld those beauties and praise.
When your beauty and elegance appeared

A slender-waisted woman: you take her face for the midmorning sun,
Haifa thinks her face is the morning sun
risen; and you take her figure for a reed stalk.
She rose and thinks her stature is a branched palm tree

She appears, and her light erases the darkness of night,
She appears and her light dispels the darkness of night
until you take the night for unmistakable dawn.
You'd think the night was a bright morning between us

She walks upright; then, when her figure remembers
She walks erect, so when she remembers her stature
that swaying is a branch's nature, it sways.
That bending is the trait of the branch, it bent

O my reproacher, by God, you have not been fair to me
Oh you who blame me, by God you have not been fair to me
in what you blame me for, while you do not know what is here.
In what you blame while you are ignorant of what is here

You urge me to lower my gaze from her; yet if she appeared,
You advise turning eyes away from one who, if she appeared
you would make gazing at her your habit.
Would make gazing at her our habit

She never angered me except once,
She has never angered me except once
when I said, “I would sacrifice myself for you,” she said, “Rather, I would.”
When I said "I sacrifice myself for you" and she said "No, I do"

She sought to please me with what pains my ears
I sought her satisfaction with what offends my hearing
concerning her, and makes me rejoice and grieve.
And causes me to be secretive and sad

I have kept—since separation carried my loved ones far
I have not ceased, since I rode off with my loved ones
and you traded my sleep for streaming tears—
And you prevented me from sleeping, to let our tears flow

seeking leave for the dream-phantom, should slumber enter
Asking leave of the beloved, if he would enter the abodes
my eye; yet its tears refuse permission.
Of my eyes, but my tears refuse to permit it

If only your phantom could wade through the seas of my tears,
If your phantom plunged into the seas of my tears
as I wade through the sea of Yahya's bounty!
My plunge into the sea of Yahya's generosity makes it possible

He gave until the visitors thought
a dream, and kept rubbing their eyes.
It was a dream, and they kept wiping their eyes

After that, no achievement remained within a king's reach
No state remains for any king after her
that would clearly make him worthy of praise.
That qualifies for clear praises
