غيّبواthey hid فيin التربthe dust عنّيfrom me شخصهاher form
غيّبوا في الترب عنّي شخصها
فدموعىso my tears رسلmessengers عينىmy eye فىin ثراهاher soil
فدموعى رسل عينى فى ثراها
They hid her form from me in the dust.
They buried her body away from me
So my tears are my eye's messengers in her soil.
So my tears became messengers to her grave
أخلصتshe was sincere in حبيloving me وأخلصتand I was sincere in الأسىgrief
أخلصت حبي وأخلصت الأسى
أحسنmay He improve اللهGod عزائيmy consolation وجزاهاand reward her
أحسن الله عزائي وجزاها
She was sincere in loving me, and I in my grief.
I was loyal in my love and sorrow
May God grant me consolation and reward her.
May God bless my consolation and reward her
أرضعتنيshe nursed me وسقتهاand watered her أدمعيmy tears
أرضعتني وسقتها أدمعي
سكنتshe dwelt in قلبيmy heart كسكنايlike my dwelling in حشاهاher womb
سكنت قلبي كسكناي حشاها
She nursed me, and my tears watered her.
I fed her my tears
She dwelt in my heart as I dwelt in her womb.
She dwelled in my heart as I dwelled in her shelter
أينwhere ذاكthat اللطفtenderness منfrom هذاthis الجفاcoldness
أين ذاك اللطف من هذا الجفا
لمdid not تردshe wanted ذلكthat لوif تعطىshe is given مناهاher wish
لم ترد ذلك لو تعطى مناها
How far that tenderness is from this coldness!
Where is that kindness amidst this harshness
She would not have wanted that, had she been granted her wish.
She wouldn't have done this if offered the choice
حلفan oath الصادقof the truthful one إنيindeed I لاnot أرىI see
حلف الصادق إني لا أرى
صادقاsomeone sincere فيin الحبlove ليfor me حتىuntil أراهاI see her
صادقا في الحب لي حتى أراها
I swear a truthful person's oath: I shall not see
The truthful one swore that I won't see
anyone sincere in their love for me until I see her.
A truly loving one until I see her
