    قصدى فلا بلغت قصدي

    If anyone but the dear folk of Najd

    were my aim, may I never attain my aim;

    or if anyone but them seemed fair

    to me, may I never be inspired to sound judgment.

    It is more fitting that my affection be

    reserved in full for my dear loved ones.

    And even if the beauty of others

    were fair, a noble pledge would reject it.

    Between me and my beloveds

    at the sandy bend of al-Muhassab lies a pledge of love,

    and reunions at al-Ghada

    that atoned for every separation and rejection.

    Were it not for a remnant of delight

    from the sweetness of a carefree life gone by,

    I would not have remained alive after

    the companions departed and I returned alone.

    I swear by a life long past,

    sweet upon the fringes of Najd:

    may there be no rest short of Muhajjar

    and its dear folk, for my longing and my glory.

    Do you think my mount will be given rest,

    and I will rest from untying and tying,

    وأحل دارة دار هند

    and it will alight in the hollow of ʿAlij,

    and I will alight in the precincts of Hind's home;

    من ماء كاظمة ببرد

    and the heat within my ribs will be quenched

    with coolness from the waters of Kazimah;

    ذا القلب من هجر وبعد

    and favor's tenderness will relieve

    this heart of estrangement and distance;

    ما زلن في تعب وكد

    and my hopes will find rest—those that

    have remained in weariness and toil;

    and I will lend the night-roaming east wind

    my cloak, and trail it at al-ʿAlamayn?
