إذا ما بثثت الشوق يا عز فاعلموا
بأنthat يسيرa little of الشوقlonging يعجزis too much عنfor بثيmy telling
بأن يسير الشوق يعجز عن بثي
When I pour out my longing, O ʿAzz, know
That even a little longing is beyond my telling.
تجددare renewed ليfor me الاشواقlongings فىin كلevery ساعةٍhour
تجدد لي الاشواق فى كل ساعةٍ
علىupon باليmy mind البالىworn-out ومصطبرىand my patience الرثthreadbare
على بالي البالى ومصطبرى الرث
Longings are renewed for me every hour,
Upon my worn-out mind and my threadbare patience.
وانفثand I breathe out أشكوI lament فرقةa parting فيطبهاso it cures it
وانفث أشكو فرقة فيطبها
بأخرىwith another كأنas though البينseparation يطربdelights منat نفثىmy sighs
بأخرى كأن البين يطرب من نفثى
And I sigh, lamenting a parting, which it cures
With another, as though separation delights in my sighs.
