ياO مذهبينyou who wear away بجسميmy body
وذاهبينand going away بقلبيwith my heart
O you who wear away my body
My friend, your words stirred my heart
and carry off my heart,
Though your tongue is foreign to me
مالىI have nothing علىin البعدseparation الاّexcept
ارسالsending دمعيmy tears وكتبيand my letters
In separation, I have nothing but
I sense the longing, the separation
the sending of my tears and letters.
That echo in your poetry
وحقand by the sanctity of ماwhat كانwas منكمfrom you
منof طيبsweetness وصلunion وقربand closeness
And by what once came from you—
The distance pains, and comforts flee
sweet union and closeness—
Yet pens and tears may still take wing
لولاwere it not that هواكمmy love for you حياتىmy life
قضيتI would have met بالبينthrough separation نحبيmy death
were loving you not my life,
To bridge what cruel fate decreed
I would have died of separation.
And balm the wound that sorrow brings
