بالخيف وما أدراك بالخيف هوى
لوif رامsought سواهother than it القلبthe heart لمnot يلفfind سوىany other
لو رام سواه القلب لم يلف سوى
At al-Khayf—and what do you know of al-Khayf?—there is a love.
With prudence, though how could you know of prudence, my heart fell in love
Were the heart to seek anything else, it would find no other.
If it had desired another, it would not have turned to any but him
مهماwhenever ناجاكwhispered to you حسنbeauty شىءa thing بهوىof love
مهما ناجاك حسن شىء بهوى
فاعلمso know حقاfor certain بأنهthat it عنهfrom it روىrecounted
فاعلم حقا بأنه عنه روى
Whenever the beauty of anything whispers to you of love,
No matter how the beauty of something captivates you with love
Know for certain that what it recounts comes from that love.
