فأزاله ملقاك بالسراء

Your absence was nothing but pain that touched me;

Since parting from you, naught but harm has touched me,

then meeting you dispelled it with joy.

Yet meeting you dispels it, bringing joy instead.

ومرارة التفريق تعذب مطعما

ومرارة التفريق تعذب مطعما

للمرء عند حلاوة التلقاء

للمرء عند حلاوة التلقاء

And the bitterness of parting grows sweet to taste

And though the bitterness of absence tortures,

for a person amid the sweetness of reunion.

It's sweetened at the joy of our reunion.

وله حاذر عداك الأقربين من الورى

وله حاذر عداك الأقربين من الورى

فأضرها القرباء والقرناء

فأضرها القرباء والقرناء

Also by him: beware your closest enemies among humankind;

Beware those near you in creation but not in spirit,

for the most harmful of them are relatives and companions.

For relatives and friends can surely injure you.

وتوق من كيد الحقود ولين ما

وتوق من كيد الحقود ولين ما

يبدي فقد يصدى الحسام الماء

يبدي فقد يصدى الحسام الماء

And guard against the spiteful man's guile and the gentleness of what

And wish to avoid the envy of the spiteful, though it seem

he shows, for water may rust the sword.

As gentle as a sword that slices through water.
