لحا الله دنيانا التي مذ عهدتها

تعز خساسا أو تذل عزازا
May God curse our world, which, ever since I have known it,
God has granted us a world since we knew it
Exalts the base or abases the noble.
That degrades the humble or humiliates the honored
عجوزan old woman إذاwhen ساءتshe saddens تسوءshe saddens حقيقةtruly
عجوز إذا ساءت تسوء حقيقة
بنيهاher sons وانand if سرتshe gladdens تسرshe gladdens مجازاfiguratively
بنيها وان سرت تسر مجازا
An old woman: when she saddens, she truly saddens
An old woman, if she is evil, is truly evil
Her sons; and if she gladdens, she does so only figuratively.
Her sons, even if proper, are only metaphorically so
