Is glory anything but a palm tree you are its branch?
Or earnestness but a trait ingrained in you?
Or excellence anything but a palm in which you imprinted its nature?

Or generosity anything but blessings that scattered
whose gathering was found only in your bounty?
So none gathered them but from your attainment.

علوت افتخاراً إذ تواضعت المورى

ونفس الكريم الأصل يحسن وضعها
You rose in honor when you humbled yourself before humankind [reading uncertain].
You rose proudly when the fates were humble
And humbling a soul of noble stock is fitting.
And the soul of the generous is virtuous in its disposition.

You were nothing but the sun, dazzling gazing eyes,
You were nothing but the sun whose looks set
whose sight is shunned while its benefit is sought.
So it leaves its mirror and seeks its benefit.

May ruin befall those who brought a blemish upon you
Clarity in a people who showed you a blemish
through a war whose dust inflamed the sun's eye.
With a war that blinded the eye of the sun and muddied its springs.

They were the troops and the advisers among you,
They were the soldiers and the advisors among you
and their hands held the central role—why did their work go wrong?
And their middle hands, so how bad was their making.

They threw you in the heart of enmity and lagged behind
Did they hope, with you alone, to take the enemy in pairs?
They shot an arrow from you taken for its feathers.

They did not know that enemies are perishing
that cannot be crossed with ill-laid plans,
Hard to reach with bad planning to cut it off.

You are like the flexible bow, no defects in it
the shame is the archer's when its wooden bow misses.
And shame is upon the archer if his source erred.

We saw you strong of hand amid the days' assaults,
We saw you while the days tyrannized
seizing their forelocks, though their own grip was cruel.
With slapping the foreheads of its nights, so miserable was its slapping.

We were parched, seeking drink, and hungry;
While we are hunters seeking sustenance out of hunger
and would quenching a parched heart's burning thirst shame you?
And the yield of the hunter's heart criticizes you and muddies its springs.

So you were sweet, wholesome water for us, and a palm
You were for us pleasant water and a palm tree
shedding its fruit without its trunk being shaken.
That hangs its fruit and its trunk never shook.

Thus I befriended time after its unruliness,
That is why you accompanied time after its serving
and my hopes grew youthful, though their bough had turned gray.
And my hopes were youthful though its branch grew old.

I found my fortune in your shelter, supporting
And I was destined in your shelter to have
the wishes of a soul so often at the end of its endurance.
The hopes of a soul that had long felt narrowed in its scope.

So I parted from my friends, relatives, and family
how many blessings have their udders milked from afar!
And how many blessings go to waste with distance that wrings its udder.

And I came to you, cutting the distance in secret
journeying through deep darkness when its stretches turned black.
And traveling the milky way when its pieces turn black.

We rode the fast she-camels or their coats tore up.

Lean mounts, folding their ribs together [wording uncertain],
Ropes that fold over ribs
from hunger, while their limping folded the desert away.
On desolation, and the distance folds it over its hillock.

The night has an illumination with the flowers of its stars
like a wedding night with its candles lit.
Like a wedding night that lights its candles.

And I was, when I met you, like nothing I had met before
more distraught than an eye hastening its tears.
More intensely sad than an eye that sends forth its tears.

Hoping that recollection will mend its crack.

To my eyes a mirror increasing its gleam.

The gray doves among the leaves had a lilting melody,
And for the soft leaves among the leaves a returning melody
and their refrain was sweeter than the melody of birdsong.
Sweeter than the most melodious songs' echo.

And a garden: when the east wind passed its boughs,
A meadow, when the morning breeze passes through its branches
they offered and withheld like a maiden.
Some grant the maiden her request, some deny.

I imagined it where the beautiful wild cows wander securely.

Scenes that make the heavens weep in agony for it.

We knew gazelles there, grazing on the grass,
We knew it would settle with tranquility on the grass
yet they grazed and fed upon nothing but the heart.
None would graze it but the heart in its grazing.

How many calamities overwhelm a young man's endurance,
And so many adversities, the young man feels too narrow to encompass
whose removal he hopes for from God alone.
And hopes for relief only from God.

Many things restrain the soul and desire;
And matters that deter the soul and passion
though repugnant to one's nature, their restraint is good.
Even if they seem ugly to disposition, are good to deter.

Many a one butts a solid rock without need,
How many sterile butters senselessly

Undermine my stability, exhausting themselves uprooting it.

They became debris, land crop and its cultivation.

So take this poem: it sings to the melodies of Ma‘bad,
There, without you, the songs of the temple grow silent
and its rhymed song releases fragrance on the page and in the breath.
And inspiration is stifled in the soul and poetry in its echo.

My life will continue as long as nights continue

For they reap your existence like date palms their ripening clusters.
