لكل من الدنيا مرام يحده

وما أنا بالرائي حدود مرامي

Each person in this world has an ambition to limit him,

And I am not one who sets limits on my ambitions.

رزقت فؤاداً دونه الصخر ملمساً

على كل أمر يقتضيه حُسامي

I was granted a heart smoother than stone,

Ready for whatever my sword demands.

الا ان هم الندب عظم اهتمامه

وتلك سجايا قلب كل همام

Except that the worry of misfortune occupies it greatly,

Those are the attributes of the heart of every protector.

وأي حمى للمرء يستر عرضه

إذا عافه في الأمر خوف حمام

And what protection can a man have to guard his honor,

If fear of doves overtakes him in the matter?

تدرعت حزمي واحتبى القلب صبره

ولازمني عزمي لزوم خصام

I armored myself with my resolve and my heart concealed its patience,

And my determination accompanied me like a quarrel.

وإني بسم اللَه في طلب العلا

أجد ورائي تارة وأمامي

By God’s name, I seek excellence;

Sometimes I find it behind me and sometimes before me.

وما طمعي اني أدوم مخلداً

ولا هذه الدنيا بدار دوام

And I do not hope to live forever;

This world is no abode of eternity.

واعلم ما ان نلته اليوم سالما

سأتركه فيما غد بسلام

I know whatever I gain safe today,

I will leave it in peace tomorrow.

ولكن آمال الكرام كثيرة

إذا كانت الدنيا منال كرام

But the hopes of great men are many,

If this world can be won by the great.
