The end of sorrow's span is the beginning of relief,

Like night, whose ending is the beginning of dawn.

    فرب متسع من ضيق حرج

    So I do not blame you for the endurance imposed upon you;

For many an opening comes from oppressive straits.

Nor do I condemn a time that keeps disturbing us:

Have you ever seen a noble man untroubled?

For they are like the piercing force of wide, dark eyes.

    Our pursuit of lofty honors has increased our toil;

We do not climb the highest steps in ease [text uncertain].

And our striving on the path of glory has kept us

From the paths of a wayfarer who snatches at pleasures.

I do not rebuke a friend who turns aside from me,

Or whom a discerning man's rebuke has not turned from crookedness.

And people are slaves to whoever possesses radiant splendor.

They have no need to dispel their error through me:

What use are lamps to one born blind, who cannot be blamed?

Turn aside to the bend of their valley and cry aloud.

For how often the carefree ignore a sorrowful one's grief!

And describe to them one who, when passion tells him,

“Enter the needle's eye,” enters it, wasted by illness.

And tell the one who tires of the sighs I send upward,

And stubbornly protests at my tears, more copious than the ocean depths:

What harm if the sight of him froze their flow,

And quenched the fire with his honey-sweet snow?

And ask him, if there is no union, for a vision in sleep.

Who will help the fallen? What discredit comes from lameness? [Text unclear.]

In Khuffan's lions, they would neither charge nor stir.

I would sing love-verses in it in varied lilting rhythms.

And inarticulacy is the most ruinous master of souls.

He is a scholar in the sea; no description can encompass him,

And I see description as nothing but contained within him.

My likening anyone to him is a kind of satire:

And many a man praised for noble deeds has been lampooned.

All creation has agreed that no creature surpasses him

In knowledge and forbearance—unanimously, without reservation.

You have overtopped the stars; stop at night travel's furthest bound.

And an hour of yours reckons a traveler through years [text unclear].

For it is grievously sick and burning with pain.

For they establish the claim without evidence.

And may you never be severed from the days,

Until time puts on a robe of [unclear word].
