ولربand many a سربa bevy أوانسmaidens ناديننيcalled to me
والطعنand spear-thrusts ينزعwrenches out منfrom أديميmy skin الأعظماthe bones
And many a bevy of maidens called to me,
And many a flock of companions called me
While spear-thrusts wrenched the bones from my skin.
As the stab kept tearing my greatest hide
فأجبتهنso I answered them مدافعاًdefending ومصادماًand fighting
عنout of حبهنlove for them معمماturbaned وملثماand face-veiled
So I answered them, defending and fighting,
So I answered them defending and confronting
Out of love for them, wearing a turban and a face-veil.
About their love all wrapped and masked
وودتand I wished يوميmy day أنthat أموتI die مكرماhonored
منin دونهنtheir defense ولاand not أعيشI live مذمماreviled
And that day I wished to die with honor,
And I wished my day to die honored
In their defense, rather than live reviled.
Without them and not to live blamed
