A greeting from a supplicant sincere in his prayer,
Greetings, a devoted supplicant in his prayers,
and the longings of one whose ribs enclose embers,
And yearnings folded within my ribs over embers,

and the fragrance of praise, sweet in scent, as though it were
And a fragrance of praise pleasing in its diffusion, as though it were,
tales of what the breeze tells about the blossoms.
Conversations the breeze relates about flowers.

خيالك الحاظي فتدنيك من فكري
When the dwellings lie far from you, my glances conjure
When the homelands were far from me, your image appeared,
your image, bringing you close to my thoughts.
My vigilant imagination, so you seemed near in my thoughts,

And at the remembrance of you my eye lowers in awe,
And the mention of you rushed into my eyes reverently,
and my limbs are humbled, as though you were in my breast.
And my limbs humbled as if you were in my breast.

لكثرة ما يلقى الفؤاد وما ادرى
And over separation my eye sheds its tears,
And my eyes rained tears over the separation,
for all that the heart endures—and I know not.
For how much the heart encounters without my knowing.

O my master—rather, master of the imams of his age—
My master - no, the master of the imams of his time,
and he who is most deserving of praises and thanks:
And the most deserving of praise and thanks,

My yearning has called me to compose poetry
He called me to compose poetry longing for you,
for you, though I hold your rank above my verse.
Though I hold your merit above my verse,

Even were it like precious pearls, I would deem it paltry
And even if it were like precious pearls I would spurn it
before you—and are pearls offered to the sea?
Beside you - can gems be offered to the sea?

I am like one who sends spells and perfumes
magic to Babylon, and perfume to Shihr.
To Babylon, to Shahr.

Yet from you I borrowed its foundations,
But I drew its fundamentals from you,
as the hand of rain showers the surface of the seas.
As the rain streams poured from the seas by the droplets.

For how many a reunion in secure refuge from fate!

If the master falls silent regarding what I have in mind,
If the Master restores me from my withering,
I shall travel aboard a ship to him, without lean steeds.
I will journey on a ship to Him with no concealment.

And if in delay lie good and the better choice,
And if there is goodness and bounty in delay,
we shall be patient in both states, in hardship and ease.
We will be patient in hardship and ease.

وفي الخير لا الأخبار من ذي حجى غنى
فإنfor indeed أولىthe most fitting of الآراءopinions تحسنprove good فيin الأمرthe matter
فإن أولى الآراء تحسن في الأمر
And in goodness—not tidings—from a discerning man lies sufficiency,
In goodness, not news, one of wisdom is sufficient,
for the most fitting opinions serve the matter well.
For the best of views is seemly in the matter.
وفيand in قدرthe measure of ماwhat أنهىI convey إليكto you كفايةsufficiency

عنinstead of الجهرopen declaration انindeed السترdiscretion أليقmore fitting بالحرfor a freeborn man
عن الجهر ان الستر أليق بالحر
And the measure of what I convey to you is sufficient,
And insofar as I have conveyed to you, it suffices
without open declaration: discretion better suits a freeborn man.
Silently - covering is more appropriate for the noble.
فدمso remain آمناsafe from غدرthe treachery of اللياليthe nights فأننيfor I
فدم آمنا غدر الليالي فأنني
رأيتhave seen اللياليthe nights لاnot تملgrow weary منof الغدرtreachery
رأيت الليالي لا تمل من الغدر
So remain safe from the nights’ treachery, for I
So sleep securely though the nights betray,
have seen that the nights never tire of treachery.
For I have seen the nights never cease betrayal.
