وتحسبand do you think دهريmy fate لانhas softened ليtoward me بعدafter عظهits biting cruelty
Do you marvel, my friend, at the visit of the one who shuns me,
I wonder why my friend no longer visits me
And think my fate has softened toward me after its biting cruelty?
And thinks my life is finished since I have no more to give
وماand not زارنيhe visited me إلاexcept لأقبلso I might accept زورهhis falsehood
والفظand I spit out فيماin what مرbefell ليme مرthe bitterness of لفظهhis words
He visited me only so I might accept his falsehood,
He only visited to accept my gifts
And, amid all that befell me, spit out the bitterness of his words.
And when gifts ceased his sweet words also ceased

Yet the days may sway the affection of one hard to win,
Time can be kind after being mean
Much given to cruelty, peerless in beauty, harsh in manner.
Often it brings good from the bad it's seen

ولمand did not يعتبرheed فيin وعدهhis promise قدرthe weight of وعظهhis counsel
For how often, by shunning me, he has weakened my strength,
How often sternness makes my friend stay true
And, in his promise, paid no heed to the weight of his counsel.
Not like his empty promises that rang untrue

And some oryx are frailer in their pledges than crystal,
Some cares make promises they do not keep
When a rock strikes it with crushing force.
When the rock is hard, it's peace they cannot reap

So I spent the night with him in an impossible state,
So they remain in a sad impossible state
Though the heart gained from it its fullest share of bliss.
Though the heart attained the fortunes of its fate

Like one who casts his burden off—oh, for slumber!
Like one who casts off the burden he bore
When his eyes awaken, it returns to weigh him down.
When he wakes his eyes, the weight returns once more

From his mouth he beguiles me, in the garden of his beauty,
He flatters me, his beauty like a flowered meadow
Upon the roses of his cheeks and the narcissus of his gaze.
With cheeks of roses and glances warm and mellow

He bade me farewell for fear of the watcher; I said, 'In
But fear of gossip made me say goodbye
God's sheltering safety and protection may you journey.'
God watches over me, so no need to lie
