Your estrangement provokes us, yet we forbear.

And love's taste grows sweet, though love is bitter colocynth.

We freely show contentment despite displeasure, and love—

we see it as our gain, though it is a burden.

For your sake we abase souls that have not died of grief,

and disdain the eye's tears, most of them blood.

    فنم علينا الدمع وهو منمنم

    May God protect beloved ones whose love we concealed;

yet tears, finely patterned, betrayed us.

I have never seen anything like tears for exposing a secret:

they show it plainly to enemies, though it is hidden.

Nor are far-wandering doves, cooing in their grief,

swaying the branches on the sand dune and warbling,

lamenting without a mate and dictating their passion

upon the trees' leaves, while the dew inscribes it,

and working wonders with their melodies and varied strains,

thus expressing their sorrows though their speech is inarticulate,

and watching their two chicks, already snatched away

by predatory birds circling on the horizon,

themselves cast far from their nests by the hands of separation,

their lives neither serene nor brought to an end,

greater than I in anguish and yearning,

save that they reveal their passion while I conceal mine.

I spend the night, my eyelid ulcerated by sleeplessness,

and pass the morning, my heart enthralled by yearning.

And sickness has a grazing ground and pasture in my limbs,

and sorrow finds in my entrails a dwelling and spoils.

Complaints of yearning and an outpouring of tears—

when longings grow insistent, suffering increases.

And the terror of a crushing calamity shakes me,

and love's anguish blazes within my ribs.

    فكل لياليه قسي وأسهم

    Indeed, vile Time has learned my mortal weak points;

so all its nights are bows and arrows.

By your life, the days are nothing but calamities,

and a young man's life amid them is only to be deplored.

So whoever lives in the world's shackles dies consumed by grief,

and whoever is healthy in this creation falls ill.

The distance between me and my desires has widened,

so I hold back—not from cowardice—while the ignorant man advances.

Indeed, a coward may sometimes, through his weakness, attain

a desired goal, while the discerning horseman fails.

For scabbards may be clad in gold and jewels,

while rust toys with the sword, and it grows blunt.

How long shall I be cast aside, obscure among my kin?

And how long will fortune weaken my resolve and fracture it?

Perhaps the nights hold a gift after an ordeal,

for unyielding Time may withhold and bestow,

like your return, O pride of the imams, bringing renewal

to our Shahba, since she began to crumble.
