شَقِيْقُكَyour brother غيبwas buried فيin لَحْدِهِhis grave
شَقِيْقُكَ غيب في لَحْدِهِ
وتُشْرِقُand you shine ياO بَدْرُfull moon مِنْfrom بَعْدِهِafter him
وتُشْرِقُ يا بَدْرُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ
Your brother was buried in his grave,
Your twin sleeps in the grave
yet you shine, O full moon, after his passing.
Yet you shine, O moon, and rise thereafter
فَهَلاَّthen why not خَسَفْتَyou were eclipsed وكانand would have been الخُسُوْفُthe eclipse
فَهَلاَّ خَسَفْتَ وكان الخُسُوْفُ
حِداداًmourning لَبِسْتَyou donned علىfor فَقْدِهِthe loss of him
حِداداً لَبِسْتَ على فَقْدِهِ
Why, then, were you not eclipsed? The eclipse would have been
Why not darken and let the eclipse be
mourning garb you donned for his loss.
Mourning clothes you don for the loss of him
