May you, by the sanctity of your Jesus,

bring relief to my complaining heart.

    For beauty has entrusted

you with giving me life and destroying me,

and made me enamored of crosses,

    and monks and ascetics.

Nor would I have come to the churches out of

love for them, were it not for you.

And here I am, because of you, in torment,

with no relief from the torment you bring.

    Nor can I find solace,

for you have tightened the snares that hold me.

So often do I weep blood for you,

yet you have no pity for the weeper.

So do you know what is decreed

upon my eyes by your eyes,

    and what fire is kindled

in my heart by your blazing light?

You have veiled your radiance from my sight,

yet your countenance surpasses the sun.

And in the supple bough, and in the

quivering sand-dune, are your two flanks.

And your cheeks are beside the garden,

and your fragrance comes from its fragrance.

Nuwayra, if you hate me, then indeed

I love you, I love you.

And your eyes are the two that tell

you that I am one of those you have slain.
