واصِلْmaintain ties with أخاكَyour brother وإنْand even if أَتاكَhe comes to you بِمُنْكَرٍwith wrongdoing
واصِلْ أخاكَ وإنْ أَتاكَ بِمُنْكَرٍ
فَخُلُوْصُfor purity شيءٍa thing قَلَّمَاseldom يُتَمَكَّنُis attainable
فَخُلُوْصُ شيءٍ قَلَّمَا يُتَمَكَّنُ
Maintain ties with your brother, even if he does you wrong.
Keep company with your brother though he offends,
For purity in anything is seldom attainable.
For sincere affection rarely holds sway.
ولكلِّand for every شيءٍthing آفةٌa flaw مَوْجُوْدَةٌexisting
ولكلِّ شيءٍ آفةٌ مَوْجُوْدَةٌ
إنَّindeed السِّراجَthe lamp علىdespite سَنَاهُits radiance يُدَخِّنُemits smoke
إنَّ السِّراجَ على سَنَاهُ يُدَخِّنُ
And everything has a flaw.
Each thing has a defect while it exists,
Indeed, the lamp, despite its radiance, gives off smoke.
And the lamp in its wick will smolder and smoke.
