Just this side of the solitary dune are slender boughs and dunes.
Upon them the gray doves of longing coo and keen.

And in the shade of boughs, a slender shoot upon a dune,
Its fruit beyond reach, supple in its sway, lush with branches.

And in a lair of finely embroidered cloth, a dark-eyed one,
As though keen-edged swords were his eyelids.

And among the necklaces' brilliant stars, a radiant orb,
Whose beauty is fullness, whose veiling is waning.

Upon his temple Sirius gleams and blazes,
And on his breast Orion shines in all its finery.

While your eye is drowsy at all times?

And in your radiant mouth is the slaking of my longing;
For your mouth's moisture is Sad'a's water, and my heart is parched.

A palm of his rains down whatever people desire;
Its downpours are filled with silver and pure gold.

Nor can the Euphrates and Tigris match his two right hands,
Even if they declare Almería to be Baghdad.

Through him its seasons and its air grew temperate,
So Kanun is September, and July is April.

Far be it from your justice, O son of Ma'n, that there be seen
My treasured pearls upon another's string.

عُجْturn aside بالحِمَىto the sanctuary حَيْثُwhere الخِماصُthe slender-waisted العِيْنُthe wide-eyed
عُجْ بالحِمَى حَيْثُ الخِماصُ العِيْنُ
And here she is for you, complaining of her stolen mounts:
"Turn aside to the sanctuary, where the slender, wide-eyed ones dwell."
فاحكُمْso judge لهاin her favor واقطَعْand cut off لِسَاناًa tongue لاnot يَداًa hand
فاحكُمْ لها واقطَعْ لِسَاناً لا يَداً
فلسانُfor the tongue of مَنْwhoever سَرَقَsteals القريضَpoetry يَمِيْنُa right hand
فلسانُ مَنْ سَرَقَ القريضَ يَمِيْنُ
So judge in her favor, and cut off a tongue, not a hand,
For the tongue of one who steals verse is his right hand.

Gently now, O streaming tears,
For watchful eyes bar me from beholding the one I love.

My outward manner suggests composure and understanding,
Yet within the hidden depths of my being is madness.

وما أُخْفِيْهِ مِنْ شَوْقِي يَبِيْنُ
How long must I conceal what I endure,
While what I hide of my longing shows through?

Nuwayra is the little fire within me—Nuwayra, none but her;
And there is no doubt, for certainty is clear.
