وسُقْمُand the sickness فؤادِيof my heart مِنْfrom سَقَامِthe languor جُفُوْنِهِof his eyelids
فإنْso if نَقِهْتْrecover عَيْنَاُهhis two eyes فالقَلْبُthen the heart نَاقِهُis convalescent
And my heart's sickness comes from the languor of his eyelids.
So if his eyes recover, the heart too convalesces.
مَرَادُan object of desire هَوىًof love حَفَّتْgathered بهaround it مُرُدُthe defiant ones العِدَىof the foes

An object of love, surrounded by defiant foes;
And before the gardens of eternity, hardships must be faced.
وماand not خُيَلاَءُthe pride الخَيْلِof the horses فيهاin them سَجِيَّةًan inborn trait
ولكنَّهاbut they لمَّاwhen امتَطَوْهاthey mounted them تَوَائِهُhaughty
And the horses' pride is no inborn trait of theirs;
But they grew proud when those men mounted them.
فلاso do not تَكْرَهَنْever resent إنْif خَاسَreneged قَوْمٌa people بِعَهْدِهِمْon their pledge

عَسَىperhaps الخَيْرُgood فيin الشيءthe thing الذيthat أنتyou كَارِهُare averse to
So do not resent it if a people break their pledge;
Good may lie in the very thing you dislike.

And your conquest meets you, whichever way you turn.

For it stirs turmoil in the souls of the envious;
And elicits cries of acclaim from the tongues of critics.
