ماwhat بالُstate رِيْقَتِهِhis saliva فيin سَلْمِpeace مَبْسِمِهِhis smiling mouth
وواجبٌand necessary أنْthat تُذِيْبَmelt القَهْوَةُwine البَرَدَاhailstones
Why is his saliva at peace with his smiling mouth,
when wine ought to melt the hailstones?
أَعْدَىinfected جَنَانِيmy heart فَحَاكَىso imitated طَرْفُهُhis gaze مَرَضاًillness
وغَرَّهُand deceived him أَنْthat يُحَاكِيimitate خَصْرُهُhis waist جَلَدَاendurance
My heart spread its sickness, so his gaze mirrored illness,
and his waist's semblance of endurance deceived him.
كأَنَّas though كَفِّيَmy hand فيin صَدْرِيmy breast يُصَافِحُهُshakes his hand
فماso never رَفَعْتُI raised يَداًa hand إِلاَّexcept وَضَعْتُI laid down يَدَاa hand
As though my hand within my breast were shaking his hand,
so I never raised one hand without laying another down.
ياO شَاكِيَyou who complain of الرَّمَدِeye inflammation الذيwho بِشَكَاتِهِthrough his affliction
قدalready صارَbecame دَهْرِيَmy lifetime فيهin it ليلةَthe night of أَرْمَدَاa sore-eyed man
O you who complain of sore eyes, whose affliction
has made my whole life a sore-eyed man's night.
اللهُGod والإشفاقُand loving concern يَعْلَمُknows أنَّنيthat I

God and loving concern know that I,
if I could ransom you, would be your ransom.
كَمْhow much مِنْof دَمٍblood سَفَكَتْshed جُفُوْنُكَyour eyelids لمdid not تَزَلْcease
تُخْفِيhide وتَكْتُمُand conceal سَفْكَهُits shedding حتىuntil بَدَاbecame apparent
How much blood your eyelids have shed! They kept
hiding and concealing its shedding until it came to light.
لمnot يَشْتَمِلْbe clothed بِدَمٍin blood غِرارُthe edge of مُهَنَدٍan Indian sword
إلاَّexcept وقدand already أَهْدَىhad offered النُفُوسَsouls إلىto الرَّدَىdeath
No edge of an Indian sword was ever clothed in blood
without first offering souls to death.
