إذاwhen جاءنيhe came to me زائراًas a visitor حُسْنُهُhis beauty
إذا جاءني زائراً حُسْنُهُ
أَقامَset up عليهover him رَقِيْباًa watcher عَتِيْدَاever-ready
أَقامَ عليه رَقِيْباً عَتِيْدَا
When he comes to visit me, his beauty
sets an ever-ready watcher over him.
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle بَدَاhe appeared سَرْبَلَتْهُenrobed him العُيُوْنُthe eyes
إذا ما بَدَا سَرْبَلَتْهُ العُيُوْنُ
وَخَرَّتْand fell down وُجُوْهٌfaces إليهtoward him سُجُوْدَاin prostration
وَخَرَّتْ وُجُوْهٌ إليه سُجُوْدَا
Whenever he appears, eyes enrobe him,
and faces fall before him in prostration.
هُوَhe البَدْرُthe full moon والغُصْنُand the bough خَدَّاًin cheek وقَدّاًand in stature
هُوَ البَدْرُ والغُصْنُ خَدَّاً وقَدّاً
كماjust as أنَّهthat he is الظَّبْيُthe gazelle لَحْظاًin glance وَجِيداًand in neck
كما أنَّه الظَّبْيُ لَحْظاً وَجِيداً
He is the full moon in cheek, the bough in stature,
just as he is the gazelle in glance and neck.
أتىhe came زائراًas a visitor وفؤادِيwhile my heart خَلِيٌّfree of love
أتى زائراً وفؤادِي خَلِيٌّ
فَمَرَّthen he passed بهby it مُسْتَهَامَاًlove-crazed عَمِيدَاlove-stricken
فَمَرَّ به مُسْتَهَامَاً عَمِيدَا
He came to visit while my heart was free of love;
then passed it by, leaving it love-crazed and stricken.
وغادَرَنِيand he left me بَعْدَهُafter him فيin غَرَامٍpassion
وغادَرَنِي بَعْدَهُ في غَرَامٍ
تَضْرَّمَblazed بينbetween ضُلُوعيmy ribs وَقُوْدَاas fuel
تَضْرَّمَ بين ضُلُوعي وَقُوْدَا
And he left me behind in a passion
that blazed like fuel between my ribs.
