Time is never free of its vicissitudes,

and man is subject to the decree of his time.

So leave time be, for it has never deliberately singled out

anyone for its glory or its abasement.

Like rainclouds, which do not single out for their beneficial rain

any horizon, nor choose the harm their deluge brings.

Yet its Creator has hidden depths of wisdom

in the apparent opposites among His creations.

And I learned that striving brings no success

when good fortune is not among its helpers.

And diligence without good fortune is of no use,

and a spear cannot pierce without its spearhead.

And al-Rida ibn Sumadih rose to kingship,

so he gave me displeasure in place of his favor.

And he cast my star down from the sky of his radiance,

and decreed my descent from the heights of his power.
