وَارَتْconcealed جُفُونِيmy eyelids مِنْfrom نُوَيْرَةَNuwayra (‘little fire’) كاسمِهاlike her name
وَارَتْ جُفُونِي مِنْ نُوَيْرَةَ كاسمِها
ناراًa fire تُضِلُّleads astray وكلُّand every نارٍfire تُرْشِدُguides
ناراً تُضِلُّ وكلُّ نارٍ تُرْشِدُ
My eyelids concealed, from Nuwayra, in keeping with her name,
My eyes have been sleepless because of her name
a fire that leads astray, while every fire guides.
A fire that leads astray, yet every fire gives guidance
والماءُand water أنتِyou (feminine) وماand not يَصِحُis possible لِقَابِضٍfor one who grasps
والماءُ أنتِ وما يَصِحُ لِقَابِضٍ
والنارand fire أَنتِyou (feminine) وفيand in الحَشَاthe breast تَتَوَقَّدُblazes
والنار أَنتِ وفي الحَشَا تَتَوَقَّدُ
And you are water, which no one can grasp;
You are the water, ungraspable
And you are fire, blazing within the breast.
