أمَّا الذي بِي فإنِّي لا أُسَمِّيْهِ

أمَّا الذي بِي فإنِّي لا أُسَمِّيْهِ

لكنْ سَأُلْقِي رُمُوْزاً جَمَّةً فيْهِ

لكنْ سَأُلْقِي رُمُوْزاً جَمَّةً فيْهِ

As for what ails me, I will not name it.

The one whom I desire, I do not name outright

But I will offer many cryptic hints about it.

Yet hints aplenty about him I shall cite

إذا أَرَدْتَ من الأعدادِ نِسْبَتَهُ

إذا أَرَدْتَ من الأعدادِ نِسْبَتَهُ

فَجَذْرُ أَوَّلِهِ عُشْرٌ لِثَانِيْهِ

فَجَذْرُ أَوَّلِهِ عُشْرٌ لِثَانِيْهِ

If you wish to determine its numerical relation,

If you seek his ratio in numbers to find

the square root of its first is one-tenth of its second.

The square root of first is ten times the second in kind

وإن أضفت إلى ذي الجذر رابعة

وإن أضفت إلى ذي الجذر رابعة

رأيت ثالثة زهراً معانيه

رأيت ثالثة زهراً معانيه

And if you add a fourth to the one with the root,

And if to that root you add a fourth part seen

you will see a third, its meanings in bloom.

You will find as the third a meaning most keen

ونِصْفُهُ أَوْلِعَتْ أختُ الرَّشيد به

ونِصْفُهُ أَوْلِعَتْ أختُ الرَّشيد به

فقد تَبَيَّنَ ماضيهِ وباقيْهِ

فقد تَبَيَّنَ ماضيهِ وباقيْهِ

And al-Rashid’s sister was enamored of half of it;

And half of it was beloved by the Abbasid's sister renowned

thus its past and what remains of it have become clear.

So his past and future are clearly spelled out on this ground
