ماwhat لغرابِwith the raven of البَينparting لاmay it not كاناexist
أضحكَmade laugh أقواماًsome people وأبكاناand made us weep
What ails the raven of parting—may it never have been!
It made some people laugh and made us weep.
قَلَيتُهI loathed it قبلَbefore حُداةِthe camel-drivers of النّوىdeparture
فبانَso departed قلبيmy heart قبلَbefore أنthat باناit departed
I loathed it before the camel-drivers of departure,
So my heart departed before it did.
ماnot ودَّعوناthey bade us farewell ثمَّthen بلrather أَودَعُواthey deposited
قلوبَناour hearts همّاًworry وأشجاناand sorrows
They did not bid us farewell then; rather, they lodged
Worry and sorrows in our hearts.
ياoh ليتَwould that شعريmy knowing والنوَىand parting فَظّةٌcruel
يجمعُناbrings us together الوَصلُreunion كماas كاناit used to be
Oh, would that I knew—parting is cruel—
Whether reunion will bring us together as it once did.
