Wealth is but the highest hope of the idle man,

while affection is the pursuit of the noble.

I do not love the uncouth, tiresome man, even if he is generous

    in bestowing hundreds and thousands.

And I love the young man who welcomes the guest gladly

with his sweet and gentle manners:

generous-hearted, cheerful of countenance, and modest,

the water of his character unclouded by arrogance.

And even if I received from him nothing but

a cheerful welcome, it would be more than enough.
