فَقالَتthen she said الغَزالهthe gazelle
فَقالَت الغَزاله
لاno خَيرgood فيin الإِطالهprolonging speech
لا خَير في الإِطاله
Then the gazelle said:
The gazelle said:
There is no good in speaking at length.
There is no good in prolonging
عَلَيكَyou must adhere بالسكوتto silence
عَلَيكَ بالسكوت
وَاِقنَعيand be content بِالقوتwith sustenance
وَاِقنَعي بِالقوت
Keep to silence,
Be quiet
And be content with sustenance.
And be content with sustenance
وَخالِفيand oppose هَواكyour desires
وَخالِفي هَواك
وَخادِعيand deceive أَعداكyour enemies
وَخادِعي أَعداك
And resist your desires,
Go against your desires
And deceive your enemies.
And deceive your enemies
وَدافِعيand resist الأَياماthe days
وَدافِعي الأَياما
وَجامِليand be courteous to الأَناماpeople
وَجامِلي الأَناما
And contend with the days,
Defend the days
And treat people courteously.
And treat people kindly
وَاِجتَنِبيand avoid اللِئاماthe ignoble
وَاِجتَنِبي اللِئاما
وَفارِقيand keep away from المَلاماreproach
وَفارِقي المَلاما
And shun the ignoble,
Avoid the wicked
And keep clear of reproach.
And part from the blamers
وَواصليand keep ties with منwhoever وَصلكhas kept ties with you
وَواصلي من وَصلك
وَارفديand aid منwhoever أَملكhas hoped in you
وَارفدي من أَملك
And keep ties with whoever has kept ties with you,
Maintain ties with those tied to you
And aid whoever has placed hope in you.
And help those who have hope in you
وَاِنتَظِريand await المَنيهdeath
وَاِنتَظِري المَنيه
وَقَصريand shorten الأمنيهhope
وَقَصري الأمنيه
And await death,
Await death
And shorten your hopes.
And shorten wishes
وِشاوِريand consult الصديقاthe friend
وِشاوِري الصديقا
وَلازِميand persist in التحقيقاascertaining the truth
وَلازِمي التحقيقا
And consult your friend,
Consult the righteous friend
And persist in ascertaining the truth.
And adhere to the truth
لاdo not تعجليhurry فَتعطبيand thus perish
لا تعجلي فَتعطبي
لاdo not تَشرهيbe greedy فَتَشجبيand thus come to grief
لا تَشرهي فَتَشجبي
Do not hurry, lest you perish;
Don’t rush and thus fail
Do not be greedy, lest you come to grief.
Don’t be impetuous and thus regret
فَقالَتthen she said الصدوحthe songbird
فَقالَت الصدوح
إِنindeed الحَياةlife ريحwind
إِن الحَياة ريح
Then the songbird said:
The sincere friend said:
Indeed, life is wind.
Life is but wind
قَدindeed عصيwas disobeyed النَّصيحthe sincere adviser
قَد عصي النَّصيح
وَاستحسنand was deemed good القَبيحthe ugly
وَاستحسن القَبيح
The sincere adviser has been disobeyed,
That disobeyed advice
And the ugly has been deemed good.
And deemed ugly as beautiful
فَسدتhave become corrupt الأَخلاقmorals
فَسدت الأَخلاق
وَكثرand has increased النفاقhypocrisy
وَكثر النفاق
Morals have become corrupt,
Morals have been corrupted
And hypocrisy has increased.
And hypocrisy spread
وَلَيسَand there is nothing إِلاexcept الصبرpatience
وَلَيسَ إِلا الصبر
خَيرthe best البُيوتdwellings القبرthe grave
خَير البُيوت القبر
And there is nothing but patience;
Only patience is best
The best of dwellings is the grave.
The grave better than homes
لاno غمsorrow مثلlike الياسdespair
لا غم مثل الياس
لاno همworry غَيرexcept الناسpeople
لا هم غَير الناس
No sorrow is like despair;
No sorrow like despair
No worry comes except from people.
No worry but people
وَعادand returned كُلeach one ورجعand went back
وَعاد كُل ورجع
وَقَدand had أَفادَhelped وَنَفَعand been useful
وَقَد أَفادَ وَنَفَع
And each returned and went back,
All will return and come back
And had helped and been of use.
Having benefited and helped
تَمwas finished الحَديثthe tale وَخَتمand was concluded
تَم الحَديث وَخَتم
وَكُلand every شَيءthing يَنصرمcomes to an end
وَكُل شَيء يَنصرم
The tale was finished and concluded,
The talk has ended and concluded
And everything comes to an end.
And everything passes
