أباحَpermitted العراقيُّthe Iraqi النبيذَnabidh (fermented drink) وشُربَهُand drinking it
وقالand said الحرامانِthe two forbidden things المُدامةُwine والسكُرُand intoxication
The Iraqi declared nabidh (fermented drink) and drinking it lawful,
The Iraqi permits wine and its drinking
And said, “The two forbidden things are wine and intoxication.”
While the two forbidden ones are intoxication and drunkenness
وقالand said الحجازيُّthe Hijazi الشرابانِthe two drinks واحدٌone and the same
فحلَّso became lawful لناfor us بينَbetween اختلافِهماtheir disagreement الخَمرُwine
And the Hijazi said, “The two drinks are one and the same.”
The Hejazi says the two drinks are one
So, amid their disagreement, wine became lawful for us.
So between their differing views wine is permitted for us
سآخذُI shall take منfrom قولَيهماtheir two sayings طَرفَيَهماtheir two ends

From their two sayings I shall take their two ends,
I will take the edge off both their sayings
And I shall drink it—may sin never leave the sinner!
And drink without burdening myself with sin upon sin
