ياO أيهاyou (vocative) الصاحبُthe patron الأجلُّmost illustrious
إنif لمnot يكُنthere is وابِلٌa downpour فَطَلُّthen a drizzle
O most illustrious patron!
O my dear companion
If there is no downpour, then a drizzle.
If there is no rain then patience
المالُwealth فانٍfleeting والذِّكرand renown باقٍenduring
والوَفرand riches فَرعٌa branch والعرضُand honor أصلُa root
Wealth is fleeting, and renown endures.
Wealth is fleeting but fame endures
And riches are a branch, while honor is the root.
Abundance is a branch, honor is the root
فاجعلهso make it دونَbefore العيالthe family ستراa screen
فالصَونُfor protection فيin أنthat يكونَthere be بَذلُgiving
So make it a screen before your family,
So make it a cover for your family
For protection lies in giving.
For virtue lies in generosity
لاdo not تحقِرَنever scorn شاعراًa poet تراهyou see him
فعقدةُfor the knot الشِّعرِof poetry لاnot تُحَلُّis untied
Never scorn a poet you see,
Do not scorn a poet you see
For the knot of poetry cannot be untied.
For the knot of poetry cannot be unraveled
