O gazelle of the sandy ground, from Abraq al-Hima,
O doe-eyed one from the flashing fever,
The gardens' breaths met you, then greeted you.
The breeze of the meadows welcomed you when it blew.
شكوتُI lamented رسيسَlingering pangs الحبِّlove شوقاout of longing وإنّنيand indeed I
لأشكوI do lament ولكنand yet أينَwhere ذوone possessing رحمةmercy يُشكيgrants relief
I lamented love's lingering pangs out of longing, and indeed I
I complained of the pain of love and longing, and yet
do lament—but where is one with mercy to give relief?
Where can I complain - who shows mercy to the complainer?
بِدّرِّwith the pearls of معاليهِhis noble qualities نظمتُI strung قصائديmy poems
فماso nothing لِيَis mine مماof what قدalready نظمتُI strung سِوىexcept سِلكيmy thread
With the pearls of his noble qualities I strung my poems;
With his shining virtues I composed verses,
So nothing of what I have strung is mine but my thread.
Yet of what I composed I have nothing left but the thread.

O Abu Haram, may every reputed miser be your ransom,
O father of the inviolable sanctuary, every ungrateful one
who repays noble praise with jest and laughter.
Rewards the generous praise with jest and laughter.
ولوand if كانthere were فيregarding أعراضِهمtheir honor ليon my part لجَاجةٌstubborn persistence
لَماwould not have سلمتescaped unharmed منfrom بطشِthe onslaught of قوليَmy words أوor فتكيmy deadly assault
And had I been bent on assailing their honor,
If I were stubborn in attacking their honour,
It would not have escaped the onslaught of my words or my deadly assault.
My words and my sword would not spare them.
