لا غَرو إن ملكَ ابنُ إس
حاقَ-ḥāq (completes Isḥāq) وساعدهand aided him القَدَرfate
حاقَ وساعده القَدَر
No wonder if kingship fell to Ibn Is-
No wonder the son of Isaac ruled
ḥāq, and fate aided him;
With destiny lending him aid
وصفتand became clear لهfor him الدنياthe world وخصand was singled out (partial verb)
وصفت له الدنيا وخص
صَcompletes 'was singled out' أبوAbū; father of الغنائمal-Ghanāʾim; the spoils بالكَدرَwith murk; with trouble
صَ أبو الغنائم بالكَدرَ
and the world ran clear for him, while singled
I described the world to him and specified
out for murk was Abū al-Ghanāʾim.
That the father of spoils is vexed
فالدهرُfor time كالدولابlike a waterwheel ليnot (begins ليس)
فالدهرُ كالدولاب لي
سcompletes ليس, 'not' يدورُturns إلاexcept بالبقرby oxen
س يدورُ إلا بالبقر
For time is like a waterwheel: it does not
For time is like a waterwheel -
turn except by oxen.
It turns not but by oxen prodded
