وَمارِحand Marih بِنson of سابقSabiq بِنson of حامدHamid
Like Amir son of Darim son of Rashid,
Like Aamir ibn Daarim ibn Raashid
and Marih son of Sabiq son of Hamid.
And Maarih ibn Saabiq ibn Haamid
قالhe said أينwhere ليfor me أَمرهhis story لأعرفهso I may know him
فَقَدfor indeed غَلَوتI have gone to excess فيin هَواهlove of him بِالصّفهthrough the description
He said: Where can I learn his story, so I may know him?
He said where can I find news of him
For I have become excessively fond of him through the description.
For I have been captivated by his love undoubtedly

He said: Yes, Amir was a king,
He said yes, Aamir was a king
enthroned over all of Nizar,
Over Nizar, all of it his kingdom

endowed with ample power, valor, and strength,
Possessor of generosity, Najd, and strength
a gallant man of illustrious house and ancestry.
An elder, like the father of a house and clan

Najd and its neighboring lands belonged to him,
He possessed Najd and what adjoins it
and those within it submitted from fear of him.
And those in it cowered in fear of him
فَخَرجthen rebelled ابنson of عمهhis paternal uncle بسطامBistam
عَلَيهِagainst him وَاستفزهand incited him أَقوامsome people
Then his cousin Bistam rose
Then his cousin Bastaam went against him
against him, and some people incited him.
And some people provoked him
فَمرso he went on يَسعىstriving فيin فَسادthe ruin of أَمرهhis rule
مُجتَهِداًstriving hard فيin قَتلهkilling him وَأَسرهand capturing him
So he went about seeking the ruin of his rule,
He went about trying to corrupt his command
striving hard to kill him and take him captive,
Striving to kill or capture him
حَتّىuntil أَتىhe came to بَعضone of مُلوكthe kings of اليَمَنYemen

until he came to one of the kings of Yemen,
Until he came to a king of Yemen
and I believe it was Dhu Yazan.
I reckon it was Yazin
فَقالَso he said ضَيفa guest مُستَجيرseeking protection وانتسبand gave his lineage
قالhe said لَهُto him أَنتَyou الكَريمthe noble one فيamong العربthe Arabs

So he said, 'I am a guest seeking refuge,' and gave his lineage.
He said I am a guest seeking refuge
He said to him: You are the noble one among the Arabs;
He said to him, you are the noblest of Arabs

so welcome! Lodge in spacious comfort and plenty,
So welcome, descend into ample space
with a great, brimming bowl as well.
And a great bowl brimming over

When at last the wine was brought
Until when the drink was served
and judgment and understanding reeled,
And dreams and minds were aflight

عامرAmir لماbecause كانhe was جَدchief همهhis concern
he foolishly goaded him against his cousin,
He defamed his cousin foolishly
Amir, for he was his chief concern.
Aamir, since he was his greatest concern
وَقالand he said ملكa kingdom ضائعneglected ماno فيهin it
ذوone possessing نَجدةvalor إِنif رُمتَهُyou sought it تَحميهwould protect it
And he said: A neglected kingdom, with no one in it
And said, a lost kingdom weak
of valor to defend it, should you seek to take it.
With Najd, if you sieged him, protecting him
وَعامرand Amir قَدhas أَوحَشalienated العَشائِراthe clans

فَعادَso became كُلall القَومthe people مِنهُfrom him نافِراrecoiling
And Amir has alienated the clans,
Aamir has estranged the clans
so all the people have turned away from him.
So all the people resent him

And if the ranks met in battle,
And if the ranks met in battle
and the spears and swords complained,
And the spears and swords collided

لِغَيظهمbecause of their anger لماat what لَقوهthey suffered it مِنهُfrom him
the people would turn from him to you,
The people would turn against him for you
in their anger at what they had suffered from him.
In their fury over what they saw of him
فإِنfor indeed مَنwhoever لاdoes not يَحفَظsafeguard القُلوباthe hearts
يخذلis forsaken حينwhen يَشهَدhe takes part in الحُروباwars
For whoever does not safeguard hearts
For he who does not keep hearts safeguarded
is forsaken when he takes part in wars.
Will be abandoned when battles flare up
وَمنand whoever أَضاعneglected جُندَهhis troops فيin السلمpeacetime
لَمnot يَحفَظوهthey protect him فيin لِقاءmeeting الخَصمthe foe
And whoever neglects his troops in peace
He who neglected his soldiers in peace
will not be protected by them when he meets the foe.
Will not keep them in facing the opponent
فَالجُندfor the troops لاdo not يَرعونcare for منwhoever أَضاعَهُمneglected them
كَلاno indeed وَلاnor يَحمونَthey protect منwhoever أَجاعَهُمstarved them
For troops do not care for one who neglects them;
The soldiers do not care for one who neglected them
no indeed, nor do they protect one who starves them.
No, they do not protect one who starved them
وَبرهُمand kindness to them وَنفعهمand benefiting them كَالذخرlike stored treasure
وَحفظهمand safeguarding them يَنفعhelps عِندَat الذّعرpanic
And kindness and benefit to them are like stored treasure,
Being good and beneficial to them is like hoarding
and safeguarding them helps when panic comes.
And keeping them safe helps in times of panic
فأضعفthus the weakest المُلوكkings طراًall without exception عقداin resolve
مَنone who غَرهdeceived him السلمpeace فأقصىso he cast aside الجُنداthe troops
Thus the weakest of all kings in resolve
The weakest kings in their rule
is he whom peace deceives, so he casts his troops aside.
Are those peace deceived, neglecting soldiers
يَرضونَهُthey please him وَيظهرونand display الطاعهobedience
حَتَّىuntil إِذاwhen فادحa crushing burden of حربwar راعهalarmed him
They please him and display obedience,
They are pleased with him and show obedience
until, when war's crushing burden frightens him,
Until when the clamor of war startles him
أَقبلhe sets about يرضيهمpleasing them بِبَذلby giving المالmoney
لعلهمhoping that they يَحمونَgrow eager لِلقِتالfor battle
he sets about pleasing them by giving money,
He starts trying to please them with wealth
hoping they will grow eager for battle.
Hoping they will protect him in battle
وَلَيسَand does not يغنيavail عَنهُfor him ذاكَthat شياanything

But that avails him nothing,
But that will not avail him anything
and makes the people only more wayward,
Except to increase the people's disdain
حَتَّىuntil إِذاwhen قيلit was said نزالto battle! فرواthey fled

until, when 'To battle!' is called, they flee
Until when told of war, they flee
and leave him alone and go their way.
Abandoning him alone as they leave
وَأَسعَدand the most fortunate المُلوكkings منone who أَرضاهمpleased them
فيin حالةa state of السلمpeace وَمَنand who أَعطاهمgave to them
And the most fortunate of kings is he who has pleased them
The luckiest kings are those who pleased them
in peacetime, and who has given to them.
In times of peace, those who gave to them
فَيَعلَمونَso they know إِنَّthat ذاكَthat دينهhis customary way

So they know that this is his customary way,
So they know this is his way
so each of them does his utmost to help him.
And all strive to support him

Thus they become many, though they are few,
So the few become many
and kindness flourishes with a noble man.
And the noble becomes greater through him

And ignorant is he who stores up wealth
And ignorant is he who hoards wealth
and keeps horses and mules
And preserves horses and mules

for the hour of need, when it bears down.
For the hour of need, when it flares up
Indeed, storing up people is better, in my view,
For in my view, hoarding people is best

as in the tale of the two lions. They both said:
Like the talk of two lions who said
'Explain it to us, and keep the account brief.'
We have a son, to summarize the speech
