المُلكُkingship راسلهsent him word بأنّيthat I am مَحجِرٌan eye socket
المُلكُ راسله بأنّي مَحجِرٌ
ياO ناظريmy pupil فمتىso when تحلّyou dwell in المَحجِراthe eye socket
يا ناظري فمتى تحلّ المَحجِرا
Kingship sent him word: “I am an eye socket;
The king sent word that I'm confined
O my pupil, when will you dwell in the socket?”
Oh watcher, when will confinement end?
والدولةُand the state الغراءُradiant قالتsaid إنّنيindeed, I am
والدولةُ الغراءُ قالت إنّني
عينan eye مسهَّدةsleepless وأنتَand you لهاfor it كرىslumber
عين مسهَّدة وأنتَ لها كرى
And the radiant state said: “I am
The splendid state has said that I
A sleepless eye, and you are its slumber.”
Am a pillowed eye while you're the envy
وَزَرhe shouldered الوِزارةthe vizierate إذsince سواهothers besides him بذكرِهاby mentioning it
وَزَر الوِزارة إذ سواه بذكرِها
أزرىdebased وبالوزَرِand with the burden العظيمmighty تَأزَّراhe girded himself
أزرى وبالوزَرِ العظيم تَأزَّرا
He shouldered the vizierate, since others, by mentioning it,
The minister grieved when she was named
Debased it; and he girded himself with the mighty burden.
I grieved, and with great grief was laden
