If the seat of honor were given a tongue and spoke,
If my hand could speak, it would say
it would say, 'Taj al-Mulk has more right to me than you.'
The crown of kingship is rightfully mine

Now his eye is gladdened—it had never ceased to be
Now his eyes find rest, yet remain
divided between weeping and sleeplessness—
Torn between weeping and sleeplessness

by our lord's return; and is there any blessing
With the return of our master - and is there any blessing
greater than his deliverance from what befell him?
Greater than his deliverance from what has befallen?

The light of his judgment dispelled calamity's darkness,
The light of his wisdom dispelled the gloom of tribulations
and his face too, as the full moon dispels night's gloom.
And his face shone like the full moon dispelling the darkness

He was afloat in a sea of calamities,
He was afloat on the sea of afflictions
unafraid, like pearls that do not fear drowning.
Fearing not to drown like a pearl fears not the deep

He is like a dinar in the fire: whenever
He is like a golden dinar in the fire
the blaze grows fiercer, it grows purer and gleams.
The hotter the flames, the purer and brighter it gleams

And aloeswood reveals its fragrance when burned,
The aloes wood reveals its fragrance
and musk grows more fragrant when crushed.
When lit aflame, and musk is most fragrant when crushed

And the sword—without the polisher's whetstone, never
Without the hammer's blows, the sword
would its edge sever necks or grow keen.
Would not sharpen to cut necks and slice

That was not imprisonment, but safekeeping;
His seclusion was not imprisonment, but preservation
and what is precious deserves protection.
Guarding treasures is a worthy duty

Is the ribs' guarding of the heart objectionable, or
Is shielding the heart by ribs considered odd?
the eyelids' guarding of the pupils thought strange?
Or safeguarding eyes with eyelids deemed absurd?

Without the full moon's dark phase, it would not wax full—so should
Without the moon's concealment, it could not be full
one despair of its fullness when it wanes away?
Should its perfection be despaired of when eclipsed?

And sometimes a sword is kept safe in its sheath, and sometimes
A sword may be sheathed for protection
the high stars disappear in the twilight.
And the stars fade into the sunset, veiled from sight
