لمّاwhen تديّرتI settled أرضthe land of قُمِّQum
Fate threw me in with a thief,
Time brought me into unlawful acts
when I made my home in the land of Qum.
When the land of Qum turned around
نزلتُI lodged فيin ربعِهاits quarter بقومٍamong people
عُميٍblind عنto المكرمُاتِnoble deeds صمِّdeaf
I lodged in its quarter among people
I descended among its people
blind and deaf to noble deeds.
Deaf to honorable deeds, blind

The bows of their backsides, to my misfortune,
Their backs are tough to my ill fate
are fired around me with arrows of flatulence.
Around me arrows of folly are shot
وفوقَand beyond ماwhat أشتكيهI complain of it
قدindeed زادincreased همّيmy worry بهbecause of him وغمّيand my grief
And beyond what I complain of,
And over what I complain about
my worry and grief have indeed grown because of him.
My worries and sorrows increased by it
إذاwhenever رأىhe sees أمرداa beardless youth مليحاhandsome

كغصنlike a branch بانٍof a bān tree وبدرِand a full moon تِمِّat its fullness
Whenever he sees a handsome beardless youth,
When it sees a handsome young man
like a bān branch and a full moon,
Like a sapling striped bare, a full moon
قامَhe rose إلىto وصلهِunion with him سريعاًswiftly
كأنّهas though he قامَrose فيin مُهمِّan important task
he rises swiftly to seek union with him,
It rises to join him hastily
as though rising to some important task.
As if rising for an important mission
