The book is complete, its chapters perfected,

Till it became a sphere among the spheres of heaven.

I composed it and labored over its arrangement,

And devoted to it my strength and activity.

O lord of the chiefs—nay, O lord of the

    Viziers—nay, O lord of kings!

O son of al-Mu'ammal, I have come in hope,

And with it laid my snares for what I seek.

O august presence of the sheikh, the hoped-for supporter,

But for you I would not have composed it—but for you!

But I found you worthy of every virtue,

And deemed my praise beneath the least of your glories.

So I strained my thoughts and schooled my musings,

And stayed awake composing for your sake.

And I came to you out of my love, though I had there

Ties, all of which I severed in hope of you.

I parted from my children, having filled them with hopes,

And promised them good things from your bounty.

So graciously show them kindness, and pity

Lambs whose rain-pouring sky is your two hands.

For they are like downy nestlings in their nests,

With hollow crops, awaiting your bounty.

And how many a watchful enemy there

Had fed my hopes with someone other than you!

And if I return, as I came, in disappointment—

Far be from you what I fear—far be it from you!—

He would cry out against me, rebuking and shaming me,

Since praise had kept me from meeting you.

Endure, and the joy of virtues and hopes shall endure,

In a reign that rules in defiance of your foes.
