ما حطَّ قدرَهُمُ ولا أزرى بهم

عزلٌ عجلتَ به وأنتَ سديدُ

عزلٌ عجلتَ به وأنتَ سديدُ

Their standing was not lowered, nor were they diminished,

by a dismissal you hastened, though your judgment is sound.

لكن به ظهرت حقائقُ سعدهم

لكن به ظهرت حقائقُ سعدهم

والسيفُ يُبدي ماءَهُ التجريدُ

والسيفُ يُبدي ماءَهُ التجريدُ

Rather, through it their true good fortune was revealed,

and unsheathing reveals the sword's luster.

والأُسدُ أولى بالعرين فكم

والأُسدُ أولى بالعرين فكم

غدا يختال في خِيسِ الخِلافة سِيدُ

غدا يختال في خِيسِ الخِلافة سِيدُ

And lions have the better claim to the lair, for many

a wolf has strutted in the caliphate's thicket.

وكذا سِرارُ البدرِ أصل كمالهِ

وكذا سِرارُ البدرِ أصل كمالهِ

وبسوءِ فعلِ النارِ يُذكي العودُ

وبسوءِ فعلِ النارِ يُذكي العودُ

Likewise, the full moon's dark phase is the source of its fullness,

and through the fire's harsh action, aloeswood releases its fragrance.
