From the hands of one slender and graceful, whose beauty spot

dots the nūn-shaped lock at his temple.

He sways, drunk on the wine of pride,

as a tender branch bends in the breeze.

    إنّ شرَّ الورى اليؤوس القنوطُ

    Sin extravagantly, for God forgives;

surely the worst of humankind is the despairing, hopeless one.

And likewise, sustenance from the hands of Asʿad al-Masʿūd

is a shade spread over humankind.

His hand is pledged to generosity, just as his spotless honor

is pledged to praise and acclaim.

And when another refuses glory out of sloth,

he comes to it rejoicing and full of vigor.

Before seeing his dwelling, I never imagined a dwelling

could hold a radiant full moon and an all-encompassing sea.

If the stars moved by his counsels,

their retrogression and descent would not blot them out.
