    It is all the same whether Mayya's clans draw near or go far:

    if there is no union, their nearness is remoteness.

    If my share of them is only my eye's share,

    I console myself in their stead with gazelles reaching for leaves.

    For many a distant one is brought close by his kindly affection,

    though the riding-camels' forelegs keep bearing him onward.

    And many a close neighbor's very nearness reveals estrangement,

    though one mantle enfolds us both in a single bed.

    I swore by them as they sank onto their calloused knees,

    swimmers, floating in the mirage and plunging under:

    I never stayed in Jarbādhaqān for any purpose

    save praising his lofty rank, nor ever chose it otherwise.

    His bounteous favors hang upon every neck—

    necklaces strung together around the neck of Time.

    He has a palm whose clouds pour down in drought

    an ocean of bounty whose depths have no shore.

    تُناسبه في لِينه الرّقشُ والرُّقط

    In his exalted palm is a mottled, slender one;

    mottled and spotted snakes resemble it in suppleness.

    ففي جبهة الأيام من خطّه خطُّ

    It spits forth spittle bearing death and hope;

    so on the brow of days its script leaves a mark.

    ويظهر أحياناً وليس به ضغطُ

    And a mother nourishes it, enclosing it within her womb;

    and at times it emerges without being squeezed.

    An old woman with roots and lineage among the Zanj,

    yet her children are Romans and Copts.

    When, weary, it gives up running, it is tamed

    by slitting and trimming, and grows tractable in its arena.

    When it runs on the racecourses of pages, it makes

    a squeak, like the panting of horses as they run.
