تريدونَyou want منيfrom me أنthat تُسيؤواyou do wrong وتبخَلواand are miserly
ويختصَّand be reserved exclusively بالأيامِfor the days دونكُمrather than you الذَّمُّblame
You want this of me: you do wrong and are miserly,
And the days alone—not you—receive the blame.
وماand not جارتِwere unjust الأقدارُthe fates فيماin what جرتran their course بهwith it
ولاnor شاءَwilled بعضَsome of الفضلِexcellence والأدبِand learning النجمُthe star
Yet the fates were not unjust in what they brought about,
Nor did the star will any share of excellence and learning.
ولكنكمbut you أبغضتموهyou hated it لجهلكُمbecause of your ignorance
وأحبَبتُمand you loved المالَwealth الذيwhich حبُّهlove of it وَصمُa stain
But you hated it because of your ignorance,
And loved wealth, the love of which is a stain.
فأنتمso you عنto العلياءِthe heights of honor عُميٌblind لحبّهِfor love of it
وعنand to سائلِone asking for المعروفِkindness منfor أجلهits sake صُمُّdeaf
So, for love of it, you are blind to the heights of honor,
And for its sake, deaf to anyone asking for kindness.
وماand not جارتِwere unjust الأيامُthe days إلاexcept لَميلهاbecause of their leaning
إليكمtoward you وفيand in تقديمهاtheir giving precedence لكمُto you الغشمُblind injustice
The days have been unjust only in their leaning
Toward you; in giving you precedence lies blind injustice.
