Abode of youth, why do I see you worn to ruins,

when once I knew you peopled and welcoming?

No sooner did my tears run free through your courtyards

than my heart became a captive within them.

Mahra's crescent-like camels bore away from ʿAmir,

on the day at the dune, crescent moons and suns.

She set with them in Ghurrab—O who has ever seen

a sun whose setting makes one frown?

Ah, how dear those who departed one evening

from Wajra's valley floor, driving the pale camels hard!

Racing one another like arrows, they became

bows, so badly had the roads worn them down.

May your milk run dry, young she-camels, who shrank

love's shade until its sanctuary became a furnace.

For with their parting you have split love's liver,

and reopened in my breast a wound that cannot heal.

God be praised for a night I stole at al-Harim!

And prudence lies in my snatching joy by stealth.

So there I unveiled her before my cares, and she circled

Ibn al-Muna—the daughter of the vines, a bride.

And suns of wine in the sky of our palms had

made their zodiacal mansions goblets for us.
