I have come to ruin in Jayy among a band;
My cauldron boils over their reputations.

I keep my excrement [from] their beards, just as
I deem my sandal too noble for their ears.

They said, “Satirize them.” I said, “And who is it who...
...against one undone?”

They do not purchase excellence, in their ignorance,
For they are blind to excellence.

Each a senile, dull-witted he-goat,
His clothes a sheath without a blade.

I did not fashion praise of you; rather, I
Take dictation from the beauty of your qualities.

Your virtues dictate to my mind;
So here I am, writing what they dictate.
