How many a night I spent curled up with burning anguish,
Complaining to the star until it almost complained of me.
والصبحُand dawn قدhad مطلَkept waiting الشرقُthe east العيونَthe eyes بهِfor it
كأنّهas though it were حاجةٌa possession فيin كفِّthe palm of مسكينِa poor man
And the east had kept the eyes waiting for dawn,
As though it were a possession in a poor man's palm.
